Move As to Not Disrupt The Light You’ve Created

Your daily habits and choices shape who you are becoming. Inspired by wisdom from the yoga mat, this post explores the power of intentional living and how to align your actions with the person you aspire to be. Learn how to protect the light within you by moving thoughtfully and with purpose.

Yes, I’m bringing you another yoga-inspired gem! Being on the mat teaches me so much about life and how I ought to live it. One of my favourite yoga instructors, Alex, often says: “Move as to not disrupt the light you’ve created.” For months, it was just another phrase in class, but one day, it hit me like a ton of bricks—as if it were a message written just for me.

As we slowly reach the halfway mark, this feels like an essential question to ask ourselves:

How are your habits and actions helping you become the person you want to be?

The Power of Habits

Every choice we make is a step toward becoming someone. The question is: Who are you becoming? Your habits, both big and small, are the building blocks of your future self. They quietly accumulate, like drops of water filling a jar, until one day, they shape the very foundation of who you are. Whether it’s the morning routine you’ve been refining, the boundaries you set in relationships, or the way you respond to challenges, every action contributes to the light you’re creating in your life—the essence of your growth, peace, and purpose.

But here’s the catch: habits can either nurture your light or dim it. The way you show up daily—consciously or unconsciously—determines whether you’re protecting the light within or unknowingly disrupting it. Are you engaging in patterns that fuel your joy and align with the vision you have for yourself? Or are you allowing distractions, self-doubt, or unhealthy cycles to overshadow your light?

It’s not just the monumental decisions that matter. The small, seemingly insignificant choices we make every day—whether to hit snooze, respond kindly, prioritise rest, or mindlessly scroll—hold immense power. Over time, these choices compound, steering the course of your life. Protecting your light requires being mindful of these moments and aligning your actions with the person you are striving to become.

This isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency and intentionality. Even the brightest light can flicker in the face of neglect, but with care, it can shine steadily, illuminating your path and inspiring others. The challenge lies in asking yourself regularly: What am I nurturing with this choice? My light or my shadow?

Every decision is an opportunity—a chance to strengthen your habits, honour your efforts, and cultivate the version of yourself you aspire to be. So, pause, reflect, and move with purpose. Your light deserves nothing less.

Move With Intention

To “move as to not disrupt the light” means living intentionally. It’s about recognising the glow you’ve worked hard to cultivate—your peace, progress, and joy—and making deliberate choices to protect it.

This isn’t about perfection but about mindfulness. Ask yourself:

  • Does this habit align with the person I’m striving to become?

  • Will this choice nurture my inner light or dim it?

  • Is this action a reflection of love for myself and others?

It’s easy to get swept up in busyness or fall into patterns of instant gratification, but pausing to check in with yourself helps you refocus on what truly matters.

Practical Ways to Protect Your Light

  1. Audit Your Habits: Take stock of the habits you’ve formed. Which ones bring you closer to your goals? Which ones pull you away? Write them down, and make a plan to let go of what no longer serves you.

  2. Anchor in Your Vision: Picture the person you want to be. How do they spend their mornings? How do they respond to challenges? Use this vision to guide your daily decisions.

  3. Create Space for Reflection: Moments of stillness allow you to recalibrate. Whether through journaling, meditation, or yoga, take time to reconnect with your inner light and realign your actions.

  4. Start Small: You don’t have to overhaul your entire life in one day. Focus on small, consistent actions that nurture your growth, like drinking water first thing in the morning or committing to five minutes of movement daily.

  5. Protect Your Energy: Not everything and everyone deserves your attention. Set boundaries that safeguard your peace and focus on what genuinely fuels your light.

Becoming the Person You Want to Be

Becoming the person you want to be doesn’t happen overnight—it’s a journey shaped by countless small decisions. Every time you choose to move intentionally, to make a habit of nurturing rather than disrupting your light, you grow closer to the best version of yourself.

As Alex reminds us on the mat, move as to not disrupt the light you’ve created. Off the mat, this wisdom reminds us to honour our efforts, protect our progress, and move through life with grace and purpose.

So, as you move through this year, ask yourself: How are my habits helping me become the person I want to be? Make choices that honour your light. Move thoughtfully. Keep creating the life—and the version of yourself—that you dream of.
