The Power of Choice: Why Deciding is the First Step to Living Fully

Life doesn’t just happen—you decide how it unfolds. This post, inspired by a heartfelt journal entry, explores the transformative power of making decisions with intention. Learn how choosing actively shapes your life, brings clarity, and empowers you to live fully, even when the outcome isn’t perfect.

The Power of Choice: Why Deciding is the First Step to Living Fully

This post is inspired by one of the most encouraging things I’ve ever written to myself in my journal. I’m sharing it with you in hopes that it resonates and reminds you of the incredible power you hold to shape your life through the choices you make.

Here’s a little excerpt:

You just have to decide. Decide to have a good day. Decide how you want your life to flow. Decide what works for you. Decide to see the good. Decide to pursue your passions. Decide who has access to you. Decide the type of spirit you want to have. Decide how you want to show up in the world. Decide whether you want to stay or leave. Decide if you want to hold onto the betrayal or forgive. Decide if you want to carry the hurt or heal it. Decide, breathe and do everything you have to do in order to get there. You are the person who has to decide. Yes, sometimes bad things do happen, but you still get to decide how you react to those things. Are you going to allow life to dictate how you should feel, or are you going to do that?

What Does it Mean to Decide?

Deciding means taking ownership of your life. It’s making intentional, rational, and honest choices that align with what you truly want. Your decisions don’t need to make sense to anyone but you—they are about your happiness, your growth, and your peace.

When you decide, you take control. You stop waiting for life to happen to you and instead create the life you want.

Why Is It Important to Decide?

Life isn’t meant to be lived passively. Deciding is the key to living fully and being present in the unfolding of your story. It’s about going all in, putting your whole heart into your choices, and embracing every experience as it comes.

Being caught in indecision only brings confusion and robs you of your peace. When you decide, you gain clarity and purpose. You stop merely “going with the flow” and start dictating how the flow moves. As the saying goes: Only dead fish go with the flow.

The Cost of Not Deciding

When you avoid making decisions, you let life happen to you. You give away your power, allowing others to dictate your path, impose their preferences, and make choices on your behalf. This leads to missed opportunities, unnecessary pain, and untapped potential.

Failing to decide leaves you stuck in the limbo of “what ifs” and “should haves.” It prevents you from playing an active role in your own life and living fully.

Decisions Are Not Permanent

Making a decision doesn’t mean you’re locked into it forever. It’s okay to change your mind. Life is dynamic, and you’ll learn and grow as you go. Sometimes you’ll make the wrong choice, but that’s part of the journey.

What matters is that your decisions are intentional and made with purpose. Even imperfect decisions carry value because they reflect what you needed or wanted at that moment.

Living with Intention

Deciding empowers you to:

  • Choose how you respond to life’s challenges.

  • Shape the relationships and opportunities that come your way.

  • Show up as the person you aspire to be.

It’s not about making perfect choices but about owning your choices and learning from them.

Decide, Then Keep Deciding

Every day, life presents you with countless opportunities to decide. Choose intentionally. Whether it’s forgiving, letting go, pursuing a dream, or simply having a good day—it all starts with a decision.

So decide. Breathe. Act. Then, keep deciding. This is your life, your story, and you have the power to write it your way.
