There’s Strength in Sensitivity

Strength isn’t always about being unshakable or invincible. Sometimes, it’s about embracing your sensitivity and allowing vulnerability to shine through. In this post, we explore what it really means to be strong, challenging the traditional narrative and redefining strength as authenticity, openness, and courage. Discover the power of peeling back the layers and finding strength in simply being you.
The last few years have brought their share of challenges, and like many, I clung to the belief that pain would make me stronger. I imagined emerging from the storm as an unshakable, invincible version of myself. But the reality was far different. Instead of feeling fortified, I often felt stripped bare—raw, fragile, and more sensitive than ever.
It made me question the narrative we’ve been taught about pain and strength. What if pain doesn’t always transform us into a hardened, unbreakable version of ourselves? What if, instead, it softens us, peels back our layers, and leaves us more exposed? And what if that’s where true strength lies?
As I reflect, I’m beginning to wonder if I’ve misunderstood what it means to be strong. Who decided that strength looks like invulnerability? Who said sensitivity and vulnerability aren’t forms of strength? Perhaps it’s time to redefine what it means to be strong.
Maybe real strength is found in unmasking the person we’ve hidden beneath layers of armour, in daring to let go of the walls we’ve built to protect ourselves. Perhaps strength is being authentic in a world that often pressures us to conform. It’s having the courage to be vulnerable, to show up as our true selves, even when it feels uncomfortable or risky.
Strength is also found in humility—in coming before God, admitting our weaknesses, and seeking help. It’s in recognising that we don’t have to carry everything alone. True strength isn’t about pretending we’re fine; it’s about acknowledging when we’re not and trusting that we can still move forward.
So, maybe what doesn’t kill you does make you stronger—but only if we expand our definition of strength. Strength isn’t just resilience in the face of adversity; it’s also sensitivity, vulnerability, and the courage to stay open in a world that often tells us to shut down.
There’s strength in sensitivity. And maybe, just maybe, that’s the kind of strength worth aspiring to.
